In addition to the chamois or alpine chamois, the Pyremean chamois and the Abruzzo chamois in Italy live in northern Spain. During the ice ages, their common ancestors were also widespread at lower altitudes. The present three species evolved from relict deposits that were isolated in mountains during the interglacial periods that followed.

The chamois inhabits mountain forests, steep slopes with rocks, mountain pine regions and scree slopes above the tree line. There she can be found in packs, which are usually led by an old goat. The horns are never shed, but grow throughout life. After 5 years, however, only 1 to 2 mm per year. The coat is short and smooth in summer, but long, dense and dark to black in winter. In the large outdoor enclosure in Steinwasen Park, you can observe the chamois in their natural environment.
