The ibex living in the high mountains above the tree line had been exterminated except for small populations living in the western Italian Alps and in the Gran Paradiso massif. After 1945, the stock was significantly expanded in Switzerland and Tyrol thanks to successful reintroduction. Today, the preservation of the magnificent ibex is considered secured. The magnificent horns are never shed.
