The red deer is the largest and heaviest land wild animal that lives freely in Germany.

The Central European subspecies of the red deer is today the largest wild animal in our forests and therefore also in the Steinwasen Park. It claims for itself a wide habitat with favorable feeding conditions. Grasses, herbs, field and forest fruits, tree bark, green foliage and young shoots form its grazing. The rutting season is from early September to mid-October. Then in the evening you can hear the red deer roaring loudly. The hind comes in at the end of May or in June, more rarely two calves. There were also plenty of youngsters again this year in the Steinwasen Park. The red deer sheds its antlers every year, which then grow back even larger and more beautiful within a few weeks.
